Frequently Asked Questions

As a Soroptimist, what is expected of me?
We hope that all members of the club will commit to attend monthly meetings, participate in Soroptimist service projects and club fundraising. Our club’s success with our programs, such as “Live Your Dream” and “Dream It Be It” are a direct result of the level of engagement of our members. Members are encouraged to attend Regional, National and International Conferences, so they can better appreciate the bigger picture outside of the club level.
Are there any financial requirements?
Each club member pays annual club dues; amount set by members. As a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization, member dues are tax deductible. Most additional financial outlay is optional; some service projects offer the opportunity to contribute personally, but it is never mandatory. Twice a year the Region conducts combined meetings for all Clubs in the region. Travel expenses and registration are member’s responsibility, however; attendance is optional. Occasionally there will be an opportunity to donate funds for a special purpose.
What fundraising activities do club members participate in to fund service projects?
We raise funds by soliciting individual donations and sponsorships for the Soroptimist International of the Americas’ Dream program and the Big Goal Accelerator Projects. Most of our fundraising is conducted online and at regional meetings, or optionally by a member’s local efforts. New options are explored each year.
How is the Mid-Atlantic Online Club organized?
We operate with an elected Board, which consists of a President and Treasurer and other positions deemed necessary to carry out the workplan of the club. Club business is conducted at the end of our monthly general meetings where the membership is informed, can discuss, and vote on proposed actions for adoption. Members volunteer to serve as coordinators to lead specific activities or programs. When status is required, the coordinator updates the members at monthly general meetings. Members can make proposals to the Board before the next Business Club meeting. Our operation and accomplishments are made through the teamwork of our members.
When does the Mid-Atlantic Online club meet?
Soroptimist International of Mid-Atlantic Online (SI/MAO) club currently meets for 1.5 hours on the second Saturday at 11:00 am using Zoom, from September through June, with exception of December. March is our Dream Program Award’s Ceremony. August is the Board’s meeting time to review what the club accomplished and start a new strategic plan and refinement of services for the upcoming club year. Once a quarter, a special topic speaker may be scheduled at the monthly general meeting. The Board may call a special meeting with advance notice. With a majority vote of the membership, meeting times may change. Coordinators may meet with their volunteer team between scheduled meetings with or without a Board Member.
